PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE
The four most prevalent problems concerning our pets in South Louisiana are: heartworms, intestinal parasites, fleas and ticks. With an array of preventative products, the doctors and staff at Sherwood South can help you find the best one to meet your pet’s needs.
Heartworms are a potentially fatal disease, but one that is easily prevented with the use of a monthly oral dewormer, like Heartgard Plus, Interceptor and Sentinel, or the six-month injectable preventative Proheart. Heartworms sit in the heart and lungs and wreak havoc in these locations. They also can result in problems at distant organs like the liver and kidneys. All of the heartworm preventatives have an intestinal parasite control label as well. Depending on the product used, roundworm, hookworm and whipworm infections are prevented as well. Don’t forget: Cats need heartworm prevention too!
Fleas and ticks are external parasites that live to pierce the skin and suck the blood of your pet. These pests can be terribly problematic for some animals, resulting in allergic dermatitis and infection, not to mention has the potential to spread serious disease. Many products are available to control the flea and tick population in your pet’s environment. SSAH gladly offers our canine patients Frontline Plus, Advantage, Advantix and Comfortis (fleas only). Our feline products are Advantage, Frontline and Revolution. Ask a member of our staff which product would best suit your pet.
Sherwood South Animal Hospital also carries a variety of vitamin supplements, joint supplements and skin supplements.
